John Florio, renowned for his diverse talents as a translator, linguist, and Italian instructor at the English court, gained fame for his English translation of Montaigne’s Essays (1603) and his creation of the first Italian-English dictionary (1598).

However, his professional journey was not without its challenges. He found himself entangled in bitter disputes with several English colleagues, while also engaging in numerous collaborations within the theatrical realm. Additionally, he published works anonymously, all of which shed light on his intricate and multifaceted personality. By delving into these aspects, we can gain a deeper understanding of the true nature of this fascinating and complex figure of the English Renaissance.
